How fast agrivoltaics is growing in Germany

Agrivoltaics is growing much faster than the ground-mounted solar market as a whole. Measured against all newly commissioned ground-mounted solar systems, its share has grown about 11-fold since 2023.

Investing in agrivoltaics in Germany?

Ylektra is a Cologne-based developer and EPC contractor for agrivoltaics with battery energy storage (BESS). We secure the land with farmers and landowners, take projects through planning, permitting and grid connection, and build them with single-axis trackers and storage.

What counts as agrivoltaics

Agrivoltaics uses the same land for farming and solar power at the same time. The German standard DIN SPEC 91434 requires that at least 66 % of the agricultural yield is preserved. The Federal Network Agency’s definition of special solar installations under the EEG is based on these requirements.

Category IFarming underneath the modules, clear height of at least 2.10 m. Typical above arable crops, fruit or berries.
Category IIFarming between the module rows, for example with vertical or ground-level systems.

How the atlas counts

  • The starting point is all 21,349 ground-mounted solar units in the Market Master Data Register (MaStR) of the Federal Network Agency.
  • Only units registered as a “special solar installation under Section 85c EEG” and “land in agricultural use”, on land previously used for farming, are included.
  • The 84 register units are then grouped into 58 sites: same grid connection point, or less than 1 km apart in the same municipality.
  • The atlas is therefore a lower bound and is updated every week.
All criteria and limitations

Excluded are peatland and car-park solar, fallow land as previous use, commissioning before 2022 and units with more than 2,000 kWp per hectare, as these entries are inconsistent. Register entries are self-declarations by operators, and the land-use attributes have only existed since October 2025. The register does not record a DIN SPEC 91434 category, so none is shown. Sites without coordinates are placed approximately. The time series compares against the commissioning of all ground-mounted solar systems in the register.

Frequently asked questions about agrivoltaics in Germany

How many agrivoltaic systems are there in Germany?
As of 15 October 2026, at least 304 MW of agrivoltaics at 58 sites are verifiably registered in Germany’s Market Master Data Register (MaStR). Of this, 258 MW is already in operation and 46 MW is planned. This is a lower bound: systems with incomplete land-use data and projects not yet registered are not included.
What is the largest agrivoltaic system in Germany?
The largest site registered as agrivoltaics is in Briedel (Cochem-Zell, Rhineland-Palatinate) with around 69 MW across 8 register units. It is followed by Rodewald (20 MW) and Knetzgau (20 MW).
Which German state has the most agrivoltaic capacity?
Bavaria leads with 104 MW at 26 sites, followed by Rhineland-Palatinate (69 MW) and Baden-Württemberg (42 MW). Registered agrivoltaics currently exists in 9 of Germany’s 16 federal states.
How fast is agrivoltaics growing in Germany?
The share of agrivoltaics in all newly commissioned ground-mounted solar capacity rose from 0.13 % in 2023 to 1.41 % in 2025, about 11-fold. In 2025 alone, 118 MW of verifiably registered agrivoltaics went into operation.
How many agrivoltaic systems use trackers?
According to the register, 23 of the 58 sites use single-axis trackers. That is 123 MW or 41 % of registered agrivoltaic capacity.
What is the difference between category I and category II agrivoltaics?
Under the German standard DIN SPEC 91434, category I systems are farmed underneath the modules, with a clear height of at least 2.10 m. Category II systems are farmed between the module rows, for example vertical or ground-level systems. In both categories, at least 66 % of the agricultural yield must be preserved.
How is agrivoltaics supported under the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG)?
Agrivoltaics counts as a ‘special solar installation’ under Section 85c EEG. Systems above 1 MW compete in the Federal Network Agency’s (Bundesnetzagentur) ground-mounted solar tenders, where special solar installations have their own sub-segment. Under the government draft of the EEG 2027 (cabinet decision of 29 July 2026), category I and II systems receive a bonus of 0.5 ct/kWh on the reference value; the law has not yet been passed.
Why are some known agrivoltaic projects missing from the atlas?
Solar systems are usually registered only after commissioning. In addition, the atlas counts only units for which the operator has stated both ‘special solar installation’ and ‘land in agricultural use’. Projects under construction are therefore listed separately under recent projects.
How often is the atlas updated?
Ylektra updates the register data and the project news every week. The date of the latest register query is shown at the top of the page.
